The East London to Queenstown ride is on! Seven people have registered and we are in the process of following up on a number of local cycling enthusiasts, and hope to achieve our target of at least 20, but we will not be discouraged if fewer people register. The bottom line is that the cycle is on.
Organiser Mike Boy has secured sponsorship from DISCHEM (Two Old Boys Dave Puttergill and Brett Muzzell own the EL and PE DISCHEM franchises and have been fantastic) for cycling outfits.
Our plan is to leave East London on the morning of Wednesday 9 April – cycle 80km to Stutterheim where we will have lunch and enjoy a short rest before tackling a challenging 45km to Cathcart and hope to arrive that evening at approximately 5:30 / 6:00pm.
We have been in contact with the Cathcart Old Boys’ (Lyndon Snelling – chairman) who will be hosting us that evening. We hope to enjoy a fantastic braai with some good fellowship amongst the Cathcart Old Boys that evening.
Next morning (Thursday 10th), we depart after breakfast (approx. 7:30 / 8:00 am) and tackle the final 60km stretch to Queenstown – a hilly but less challenging section. Our intention is to link up with the 1965Ride group coming from Jo’burg either 5km out of town on the Jo’burg road, or at the assembly point at the Parry, depending on our arrival time.
We are busy negotiating support vehicles, drivers, traffic department escorts, lunch sponsorship, cycle trailers, banners, cool drink and water, energy bars etc.
All is very positive this side. We are energizing ourselves in anticipation for what promises to be a spectacular trip.
