Heidelberg to Frankfort, via Oranjeville: 147km
Time in transit 9 hours
Fourteen of us left Heidelberg this chilly autumn morning – Old Queenians Tony Frost, Peter Gerber, John Ralph, John Sturgeon, Brendan Raasch, GHS Old Girl Jenny Ralph, and Jen Wilson, Ashley Truscott, Marc Barnes and Alan Buchanan. Our fantastic support vehicle drivers are Mike and Bren Sattary and Ryan Crosley assisted by Maya Kanhai.
We were blessed with magnificent weather – a balmy 30 degrees and a gentle breeze most of the way. Hectares and hectares of mielie fields once we hit the Free State were a tad boring, but the hundreds of potholes kept our minds focused on the roads anyway.
Congratulations are due to Pete, Marc and Brendan who rode more than double they’ve ever ridden in one day!
Our lunch stop in Oranjeville was great – excellent burgers, toasted sarmies and chips at Nicoleen’s Take-aways. Just what a horde of hungry cyclists needed. She even turned a few other customers away, telling them our order was really large so they had better try one of the other eateries in town!
We have just returned from dinner, where we indulged in more slimmers’ food. Yes, you guessed it. This year’s Ride is ALSO going to be largely about food.
Tomorrow we tackle 114km as we head for Bethlehem via Reitz. Hope my legs and bum are up to it!
